Why a sit-on-top kayak?
Sit-on-tops have a similar hull to their traditional counterparts but are easier to use and are usually less expensive. They're made from rotomoulded polyethylene which is extremely tough, so they're not fazed by being dragged across a stony beach or being looked after with less than perfect attention.
Another advantage of sit-on-tops is comfort: larger paddlers or those with long legs or limited flexibility may feel less confined.
One of the biggest benefits is the ability to do a self-rescue: because sit-on-tops have an open deck rather than an enclosed one, there is much less risk of being trapped if the boat tips over. With a sit-on-top, there's no need to practice Eskimo Rolls or wet exits - which really appeals to new paddlers.
Which Ocean Kayak?
Before you buy a kayak, you should consider where and how you intend to do most of your paddling. Most kayaks can be used for a variety of activities, but remember that no boat excels at everything!
Among the other things you might need to consider are: Where will you store it? Can you really fit a 16ft kayak into the basement? How will you transport it? Even colour choice is important: do you want to be seen; or would you rather be camouflaged? Considering these issues early on will ensure you enjoy your kayak for many years.
